About the opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Ruby on Rails Developer to join a highly collaborative, long-term engineering team focused on product development, modernization, maintenance, and continuous improvement.

This is a fully remote, nearshore opportunity working closely with a Canada-based team, with mandatory overlap during Eastern Time (ET) working hours.

The ideal candidate is not only technically strong but also highly communicative, dependable, accountable, and comfortable working in a structured environment where collaboration, transparency, and task visibility are important.

This position is intended to be a long-term engagement, so we are looking for someone interested in building deep knowledge of the platform, products, and business rather than treating the role as a short-term assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, maintain, and enhance applications using Ruby on Rails.
  • Support existing applications while contributing to modernization and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in Ruby/Rails version upgrades and application modernization projects.
  • Contribute to migrations of legacy applications, services, or components to Ruby on Rails.
  • Write reliable, maintainable, and well-tested code using RSpec and established testing practices.
  • Troubleshoot application issues and provide production support and maintenance.
  • Work with MySQL and contribute to application performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Develop and maintain real-time functionality using Action Cable and Hotwire.
  • Participate in code reviews, planning sessions, technical discussions, and decision-making.
  • Collaborate closely with developers, technical leads, product stakeholders, and other team members.
  • Proactively communicate progress, blockers, dependencies, and changes.
  • Take ownership of assigned work while remaining receptive to feedback and team direction.
  • Continuously learn the team's systems, processes, products, and business context.

Must-have skills

  • 5+ years of professional experience with Ruby on Rails.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
  • Strong experience with RSpec and automated testing.
  • Professional experience with MySQL.
  • Strong knowledge of Git and modern source-control workflows.
  • Experience working in Unix-based environments, particularly Linux and/or macOS.
  • Hands-on experience with Ruby/Rails version upgrades and modernization initiatives.
  • Experience migrating applications, components, or services from other technologies or languages into Ruby on Rails.
  • Strong experience with application support, maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement.
  • Hands-on experience with Action Cable.
  • Hands-on experience with Hotwire.
  • Strong professional English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively in a structured, collaborative, and distributed engineering environment.

Nice-to-have skills

  • Experience with AWS, particularly:EC2, RDS, S3, Secrets Manager
  • Experience with Salesforce integrations.
  • Strong JavaScript knowledge.
  • Experience with modern frontend technologies or frameworks.
  • Experience modernizing legacy enterprise applications.
  • Experience with TDD/BDD development practices.
  • Experience working with distributed or remote development teams.
  • Experience with real-time web applications and modern Rails frontend approaches.
